Elena Bozhkova was born on the 12th of January 1948 in Resilovo, a charming village at the foot of majestic Rila Mountain. The home where she grew up was filled with her mother and grandmother’s songs. She could sing before she could talk.
Elena began her professional career with Bulgarian National Radio and Television’s folk music ensemble. Her original repertoire is included in the Golden Fund of Bulgarian National Radio and Television. She is one of the most familiar voices in the Grammy winning folk music ensemble, "Mystery of the Bulgarian Voices".
Elena has been honored with the following awards:
Gold medal - International radio competition for music and folklore in Bratislava, 1981
First Prize from the Festival "Dunave, plavi Dunave", Novi Sad, 1986
Grammy recipient as part of "Mystery of the Bulgarian voices"- 1990
Honorary Diploma by the Ministry of Culture of Republic of Bulgaria, 2004, 2007
Elena has performed with "Mystery of the Bulgarian Voices" on some of the world’s most famous musical stages including Carnegie Hall, Royal Festival Hall, and Kennedy Center. Wedded to the miraculous Bulgarian folklore, she passes her experience on to her "offspring" - "Chuchuligi" ("Larks") – another award winning folk music ensemble and "Shopite" – a male folk music ensemble with a rich original repertoire.
Elena Bozhkova’s creative outlets span more than just her music. She is a gifted writer, with critically acclaimed travel notes, essays with stunning images of the Bulgarian countryside, and traditional stories. In total, Elena has published four books which, through essays and short stories, bring to life for readers Bulgaria’s rich heritage and countless natural wonders.
Elena’s musical talents, dynamic personality, and passion for keeping the Bulgarian traditions alive give audiences worldwide an unforgettable experience.
